Harriman – White Bar Trail in October

Hiked:

6.65 miles. Basic Harriman trail: rocky, up and downs to keep it challenging, some views with rock outcrops, nice forest, stream crossings… and for the most part, solitude – except around shelters or within 2 miles of a parking area.

Parking: Seven Lakes Drive to Kanawauke Circle, East on 106 [edit – think I meant west], past picnic area (seasonal restrooms were open). 1st parking area on right was full so continued to 2nd about a mile or so on left. Was tight but fit. No facilities.

Trailhead is across the road and to the left a bit. You can also do WHITE BAR to the south from here. NYNJTC Harriman Map #4, B4.

ROUTE: Took WHITE BAR, pretty level, to junction of BLUE and RED.

Headed west on RED thru the LEMON SQUEEZER (always fun) up to WHITE (AT) to BLUE (Long Path) and headed back.

At junction of BLUE and RED took BLUE (lichen) to RED (R-D) south with views over rock faces. VERY windy day so this wasn’t the best choice.

It was also very crowded, several large groups, plus as we passed the shelter after the junction with YELLOW, there was a parade of people, backpackers and unleashed dogs from the 1st parking lot.

Should have taken WHITE back I guess. Took WHITE (Nurian) down the whole way to meet WHITE BAR to parking.
