Millbrook and Van Campens Glen

May 1st, 2011

We did this hike after a brief 2 mile hike at Tillman Ravine, which is further down the road from Millbrook Village. This hike is about 6.9 miles, so combined with Tillman it made for a decent length hike.

This hike starts at historic Millbrook Village and mostly follows woods roads. Get a peek at the Delaware River from atop a bluff, walk past houses abandoned because of the Tocks Island Dam project, and take a brief side trail to tiny DePue Cemetery. Then hike through Van Campens Glen – a shady, rocky (and popular) path next to a stream and waterfall.

It was a beautiful day yet we only encountered a couple of hikers on the trail.

More people were at Van Campens Glen, and once it gets warmer this area will be teaming with people. It’s one of the most scenic areas in NJ so you won’t have it to yourself, but it is certainly worth a visit. Read more…

Stokes S.F. – Tillman Ravine and Walpack Cemetery

May 1st, 2011

Our spring hiking so far was getting tripped up by weather, weekend obligations, and a vacation spent tooling around the Yucatan in Mexico (where the vast, flat expanses of trees reminded us of Jersey’s Pinelands!).

Finally we got some time free, and with some recent rain decided on two hikes with plenty of waterfall action. First up, a quick 2.0 miles at Tillman Ravine, followed by Millbrook – Van Campens Glen.

Tillman Ravine is flat out gorgeous and is an easy, short hike with a rushing stream, and plenty of water cascades. Read more…

Mt. Tammany and Sunfish Pond

October 23rd, 2010

Complete hike details, photos, and video on our Mt. Tammany and Sunfish Pond page.

We’ve done this hike a ton of times, but it never fails to disappoint… especially with peak fall foliage. This is a challenging loop that combines two of Jersey’s best hikes – Mt. Tammany and Sunfish Pond – into one.

First, we headed steeply up to the summit of Mt. Tammany (RED DOT on WHITE), with views of the Delaware Water Gap and of Pennsylvania’s Mt. Minsi. We then followed the fire road (unmarked) along the ridge, where the many blueberry bushes had turned red for fall…

We turned left onto the Turquoise trail, dropping down off the ridge. At the the Sunfish Pond fire road, we turned left onto that, which is also Turquoise. Watch for a rock cairn to follow Turquoise as it turns right off the road, down to the northern end of Sunfish Pond for a break…

Stairway to Heaven: Pochuck Valley to Pinwheel Vista

July 31st, 2010

Complete hike details, photos, and video on our Stairway to Heaven page.

Gorgeous and diverse section of the Appalachian Trail through northern NJ….

Hike first on boardwalks through marshy areas and over the Pochuck Suspension Bridge, then through hardwood forest, tall fields of wildflowers, over train tracks, a cow pasture (watch for cow pies!) and a boulder field.

All of this before steeply climbing up Wawayanda mountain on the “Stairway to Heaven” – lots of stone steps up switchbacks – to one of the best viewpoints in NJ: Pinwheel Vista. You can see the Kittatinny Mountains in the distance, farms in the valley below, and on a clear day, High Point Monument is visible. Read more…

Norvin Green – Torne Mountain and Osio Rock

June 19th, 2010

Complete hike details, photos, and video on our Torne Mountain page.

The views just didn’t stop on this hike… Hewitt-Butler trail follows along the ridge so there are views almost the whole way. Gorgeous.

There are 360 degree views from Osio Rock (too hot-n-hazy to see NYC today), and we assume most people turn around here. We had intended to as well, and go back to Otter Hole to add in a loop from the main part of Norvin, but changed our mind and decided that since the trail goes off the map edge with the notation “To Camp Vacamas, 1 Mile”…. we needed to see where that took us.
