Hacklebarney State Park

We headed to Hacklebarney to get the last bits of lovely fall color before Sandy came to town and ended foliage season…. and as it turned out made a huge mess out of Jersey in general.

Even though it was overcast the day we went, it was still gorgeous. Hacklebarney isn’t a very big park with a lot of trails, but there is a lot of scenery packed in and is a must-do park if you’re into landscape photography.

South Mountain Reservation – Hemlock Falls

Complete hike details found on the South Mountain Reservation page. With mild weather in the forecast for Jersey – in the mid-50′s in December! – we had to go hiking. Sometimes, you just need to ditch things and go for a hike. Our compromise was heading to a park under an hour away, where we [...]

Norvin Green: Wyanokie High Point, Carris Hill, Buck Mtn.

Detailed hike info and directions on our Wyanokie High Point, Carris Hill, Buck Mountain page. Lots-n-lots of views… but also lots of up-n-down on this route. We hadn’t done Wyanokie High Point in about two years so we headed back to Norvin Green (one of the most rugged parks in NJ, and one of our [...]

Pocono Environmental Education Center – Delaware Water Gap

Detailed hike info and directions on our Pocono Environmental Education Center page. With the recent heat, we were looking for a mostly shady hike and ended up in the Delaware Water Gap at the Pocono Environmental Education Center. There were also strong thunderstorms possible in the afternoon, and we wanted a route with options to [...]

Delaware Water Gap: Coppermines – Rattlesnake Swamp

IMG_0034

Detailed hike info and directions on our Coppermines – Rattlesnake Swamp page. For summer holiday weekends, we prefer to head away from the shore and the associated crowds/traffic. After poking around our stack of maps, Rattlesnake Swamp caught my eye. We’d done the trail probably a good 6 or 7 yrs ago, maybe more, and [...]

Millbrook and Van Campens Glen

IMG_0140

Detailed hike info and directions on our Millbrook and Van Campens Glen page. We did this hike after a brief 2 mile hike at Tillman Ravine, which is further down the road from Millbrook Village. This hike is about 6.9 miles, so combined with Tillman it made for a decent length hike. This hike starts [...]

Stokes S.F. – Tillman Ravine and Walpack Cemetery

IMG_0015

Our spring hiking so far was getting tripped up by weather, weekend obligations, and a vacation spent tooling around the Yucatan in Mexico (where the vast, flat expanses of trees reminded us of Jersey’s Pinelands!). Finally we got some time free, and with some recent rain decided on two hikes with plenty of waterfall action. [...]
