Long Pond Ironworks – Highlands to Lake to Lake

Hiked:
NJ/NY Border

Hiking an out-and-back on the Highlands Trail over the New York border.

5.6 miles. Took BLUE (Highlands) north over the NY border, out and back.

For hike directions for a longer hike visit our main Long Pond Ironworks page.

Decent trail, ups and down, one small viewpoint… Crossed the NY line and got to a junction with WHITE (Lake-To-Lake) and decided to stop.

It was unseasonably hot, 85 degrees and VERY humid and just not very pleasant.

Is this area there is trail that goes east, YELLOW (Hasenclever) and a lollipop loop further up, also YELLOW, called Jennings Hollow.

About a mile or less from the road, on the way back, we spotted a large black bear which took off running fast when it spotted us.

No facilities. Used Clivus toilet at boat launch area, on left, just before going over the water (when heading west).

A large parking area is on the left. Trailhead is across the busy road.

Facing that way, look to the right of the road opposite, there is a metal guardrail, the trail starts over that. Is not that obvious. Northern New Jersey Highlands Trails Map #115.

There is a visitor center listed on the map down the road, but its actually a museum and hours are only 1-4 pm.

There is a kiosk with several pamphlets on the historic buildings in the area, and one listing the sites on the Hasenclever Trail. You can also park there and meet up with this trail.
